DirectX Media Layer DirectX Foundation handles the low-level functions. My setup: HOST: Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 64-bit with 2.6.33 kernel ati radeon display driver. For example, a DirectX game that makes use of 3D imagery can run on a machine that doesnt have a 3D acceleration card because DirectX simulates the services of a 3D card.

If I disable 2D acceleration, it it watchable but it's not smooth like it would be natively - perhaps 10 frames per second. With 2D acceleration turned on, playing a simple AVI video with any player (vlc, mplayer) eats up 100% of my cpu and results in a slide show with imperfect frames, at a rate of 1 frame every 5 seconds.

I'm experiencing something similar but not with playing games, and I'm not sure if it's the same thing. Start -> All Programs -> Microsoft DirectX SDK (March 2008) -> DirectX Utilities (64-Bit) -> DirectX Control Panel -> DirectDraw -> Tick 'Hardware Acceleration' -> Click OK This will mean that all the older versions of DirectX are correctly installed and should avoid problems (mainly with Renegade) of games loading and not showing anything but.
